Top Rail Industry Trends Impacting Covered Hoppers

Covered hoppers are a staple in rail shipping. Versatile and cost-effective, they support large-scale distribution in industries and supply chains across agriculture, construction and manufacturing.

While there is some uncertainty currently across several markets, there are optimistic signs for covered hoppers and the commodities these railcars specialize in shipping:

Projected Increase in Carloads of Nonmetallic Minerals: While shipping for nonmetallic minerals declined in 2024, FTR projects carload volumes in North America will rise in 2025 and 2026 for these commodities.

Construction-Related Demand: Rebuilding efforts following recent natural disasters will drive demand for construction materials, including sand, stone, cement, roofing granules, and fly ash removal.

Cement Shipment Trends: Cement shipments have increased over the past decade, with Texas, California, and Florida leading the consumption. This trend is expected to continue, fueled by population growth in Texas and Florida and rebuilding efforts in California.

“Small covered hoppers are well-suited to help rebuild for people impacted by these horrible fires, but also in the pockets of the country that are driving new development,” said Bryan F. Vaughan, who is the VP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development for Modern Rail Capital.
